MONDAY 14th January - 25 weeks to go
Miles last week : 85(50 road,35 indoor)
Weight : 15st 9.8lbs (+1.2 lbs)
Body fat : 28.0% (-0.5%)
Tantia body type 2 (obese)
Better week for cycling - couple of indoor sessions, the first called off after 8 miles due to Pete calling from Oregon, but the second a 1 hr TT. Think I'll use this as one of my critical measures to see how much I am improving (or not). Would like to have the three laps of Richmond Park as one too, but realistically I'm not going to be in London that often to make it a worthwhile benchmark. Anyway, managed an average power of 207 watts over the hour - bit worrying as this time last year was getting 227 watts... however weight well down so the most important measure power/weight may still be OK.
Plus, decided to ride from home in Hampshire to London on a beautiful sunny Saturday. Great ride, just under 50 miles done at an average of 16.8 mph to Roehampton Gate, which is not bad considering I was on my own - last 8 miles considerably slower due to London traffic! Fairly flat ride with one serious, but short, hill over the North Downs. Caught up with a cycling club at the bottom of this and actually overtook three of them! Admittedly 2 girls and a bloke with mudguards but still good for the confidence. Glad it was only half a mile though and not 10 miles...
Weight, however, a different kettle of poissons. Stalled a bit, even with no booze - few lunches blamed, including very good roast beef lunch in Rugby on visit to see Grace.
But weight is vitally important, here's an interesting piece from Rick's blog from last year:
If I manage to loose two and a half stone (~ 15kg) that means 45mins extra!!

Estimates suggest that saving one kilogram of bike weight will save you approx 45 seconds on a climb like Tourmalet, which works out at 41 seconds per 1,000 metres of ascent per kilogram. On this basis, over the course of the Etape (4,400m climbing), this could result in a saving of 3 minutes/kg.
